Kurozu-cho, a small town shrouded in fog on the coast of Japan, is cursed. According to Shuichi Saito, Kirie Goshima’s introverted boyfriend, their town is haunted not by a person or entity but by a geometric pattern: uzumaki, the spiral, the hypnotic secret shape of the world. Its manifestations can be simple and small: shells, ferns, swirls of water, and whirlwinds. Or larger: spiral marks on people’s bodies, Shuichi’s father’s sick obsession, the voice of the cochlea inside your ear. As the madness spreads, the people of Kurozu-cho are pulled deeper and deeper, like a vortex from which there is no escape.
